Moving Ahead: An Update from the Cities: Skylines Development Team

To all our dedicated Cities enthusiasts,

Your expressions of disappointment following the launch of Cities: Skylines II and the subsequent release of Beach Properties have been both seen and deeply understood by us. We’ve requested your patience and backing, which you generously provided, yet we failed to meet your expectations. Our eagerness to address the game’s deficiencies led us to establish and pursue unrealistic timelines, culminating in the premature release of a DLC that was not ready for launch. For these missteps, we offer our heartfelt apologies. Historically, our commitments to you have included promises of enhancements, and although we are diligently working on these updates, the pace and scale of improvement have fallen short of both our standards and yours, resulting in a loss of your trust. We are committed to rectifying this.

As an initial step, we are making amends to those who purchased Beach Properties. We are transforming this pack into a free update for all players, providing refunds where feasible, and enriching the Ultimate Edition with additional content. Regrettably, we cannot extend refunds to Ultimate Edition purchasers due to the logistical challenges presented by its distribution across various platforms. We acknowledge that this resolution is far from perfect but are determined to honor the loyalty of long-standing supporters by enriching the Ultimate Edition with 3 Creator Packs and 3 Radio Stations, collectively valued at USD 39.99, ensuring equitable compensation for all.

Moving forward, we are committed to enacting immediate and substantial changes to our development strategy and how we communicate with you. This entails prioritizing the refinement of the core game and modding tools while seeking to engage more closely with our player base to inform our future decisions. Upcoming free patches and game updates are on the horizon, with the Bridges and Ports Expansion now slated for 2025. Furthermore, the upcoming Creator Packs, developed independently, will not divert attention from our efforts to enhance the game. We are establishing an advisory board comprising player representatives, Colossal Order, and Paradox Interactive to steer this year’s development roadmap. This group, selected for their community influence, will be granted full insight into our operations to voice feedback and concerns, ensuring we align our efforts with your expectations and avoid past missteps.

The console release, initially scheduled for this Spring, remains a key focus. Our reluctance to announce a firm release date stems from ongoing uncertainties, as we strive to ensure Cities: Skylines II’s performance meets the standard for a console experience. However, we are optimistic that the build set for April will indicate significant progress, aiming for an October release. It’s important to clarify that the console version development is spearheaded by a separate team, allowing us to concentrate on enhancing the PC game simultaneously without compromise.

In conclusion, our unwavering commitment is to develop Cities: Skylines II into the premier city-building game. Your continued support and constructive feedback are invaluable to us, and we are dedicated to regaining your trust. These actions represent the first step in our journey to redeem ourselves.
We sincerely appreciate your ongoing enthusiasm for our game. Stay connected for forthcoming announcements regarding the game and the refund procedure. Thank you for being a vital part of our community.

With gratitude,
Mariina Hallikainen
CEO, Colossal Order

Mattias Lilja
Deputy CEO, Paradox Interactive
