Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, still personally reviews new games starring the famed plumber to ensure they “genuinely feel like Mario”.
In an interview with Casa Brutus he said that, although the team now handles the bulk of the work, he continues to test the beginning of each game himself:
I now have colleagues who support the Mario universe, so I entrust most of the work to them. But I always personally play through the first 30 minutes and carefully check the interface — to make sure it truly feels like Mario.
Miyamoto said he regards Super Mario World as the pinnacle of the 2D era, and Super Mario Odyssey as a similar landmark for contemporary 3D games. He added that in the past each new console launch was accompanied by a new Mario adventure, and he’s now curious how the team will approach that challenge on the Switch 2.
Miyamoto joked that perhaps one day he’ll stop overseeing the process: “Maybe I’ll say, ‘I won’t watch anymore!’” (laughs). The important thing is to stay healthy until Mario’s 50th anniversary.
According to unofficial reports, Nintendo is developing a new 3D Mario game, but its release date has not yet been announced.
