During a recent episode of the The Xbox Two podcast, journalist Jez Corden revealed that Microsoft is actively assisting Bethesda Game Studios in modernizing the Creation Engine by integrating advanced components inspired by Unreal Engine technology.
He clarified that the rumored “Starfield 2.0” initiative is not a sequel or a mere reactionary patch, but a comprehensive technical overhaul. Starfield is reportedly serving as a critical testbed for these new systems, which are destined to be implemented in Bethesda’s future projects.
According to Corden, Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Group (ATG) is directly involved in the effort, drawing on the expertise of Unreal Engine specialists from The Coalition. High-level industry figures like Kate Rayner, renowned for her work on complex engine pipelines, are also said to be contributing to the transition.
Rather than a wholesale migration to Unreal Engine, Bethesda is selectively adapting specific features and workflows to be integrated into the existing Creation Engine. This strategy allows the studio to maintain its proprietary toolset while leveraging Unreal’s strengths in rendering techniques and performance optimization.
This upgraded engine is expected to provide the technological framework for The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5. While these details are currently based on industry leaks and insider reports, they suggest a significant evolutionary step for Bethesda’s development capabilities.
