“That’s When We Cross a Line”: Master Chief on AI Using His Voice – YouTube

Although he holds firm views on voice acting, Downes maintained a nuanced tone, acknowledging that artificial intelligence has “many, many positive effects on not only the entertainment industry but humanity in general.” However, he warned that the technology could ultimately “deprive the actor of their creative work.”
“I’ll certainly go on the record with that,” Downes concluded.
His comments reflect a broader, more tempered critique compared to some of his peers. While Downes focused his concerns on vocal cloning, others in the industry have been more blunt. Neil Newbon, the star behind Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, famously dismissed the tech, claiming there’s “no way” AI could ever replicate the depth of a human performance. In the gaming world, opposition to AI clearly exists on a spectrum of intensity.
In more positive news, Downes is set to reprise his role as Master Chief in Halo: Campaign Evolved, a from-the-ground-up remake of the 2001 classic from Halo Studios. Addressing the role of technology in modern development, a lead developer noted last year that AI is merely “a tool in the toolbox”—much like Photoshop—asserting that “the people are the ones truly creating the game.”
