That protective stance was certainly justified. While the industry’s reputation for adapting games has soared recently with masterpieces like The Last of Us and Fallout, the landscape was far bleaker a decade ago.

It wasn’t until the late 2010s, with the success of films like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, that high-quality game adaptations became a commercial and critical standard. Bethesda’s leadership was understandably hesitant to let Hollywood experiment with one of their most precious IPs during an era when adaptations rarely stuck the landing.

Bethesda’s patience eventually paid off when they teamed up with showrunners Graham Wagner (known for Silicon Valley and The Office) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel). The resulting series has been a triumph, currently boasting a remarkable 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fallout 4 remains a landmark RPG, but it took a decade of reflection for its true brilliance to shine through.
