James Gunn Casts Lars Eidinger as Brainiac in Superman Sequel

James Gunn conducted a global search to find the perfect actor for the role of Brainiac.

Moving ahead of the usual rumor mill, James Gunn personally announced that following an extensive international casting process, German actor Lars Eidinger (known for Dying and Persian Lessons) has been officially cast as the formidable villain Brainiac in The Man of Tomorrow. The film will serve as the direct sequel to the 2025 Superman reboot.

While specific narrative details for The Man of Tomorrow remain under wraps, Gunn previously hinted that the story will explore the complex dynamic between David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. The two iconic characters will reportedly be forced into an uneasy alliance to confront a much greater existential threat embodied by Brainiac.

Principal photography is slated to begin in April 2026. The Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to make its theatrical debut on July 9, 2027.
