IO Developer: 007 First Light is “Far Wider and More Expansive” Than GoldenEye 007

• In a recent interview with Radio Times Gaming, Smit acknowledged that while GoldenEye is undeniably a “fantastic game,” IO Interactive is building “something truly exceptional.” Rather than trying to replicate the nostalgia of the N64 era, the studio is focusing on its own unique vision for James Bond.

  “We certainly recognize it as a brilliant game,” Smit remarked regarding GoldenEye 007. “It carries immense nostalgia and critical acclaim. However, our priority is our own direction—an immersive, third-person, story-driven action-adventure.”

  While GoldenEye thrived on its tight, mission-based structure, 007 First Light aims for a significantly more “expansive” scope. “What we are delivering is a far broader and more comprehensive gameplay experience,” Smit explained. “We believe we have something special in development, and we’re eager for players to finally get their hands on it.”

  The developer’s remarks come as IO Interactive recently adjusted the project’s timeline, choosing to delay 007 First Light by two months to ensure a higher level of “polish.” The game is now slated for release on May 27, 2026.
