Icy Tower returns after 25 years — new version coming in 2026

After a long hiatus, the Icy Tower series is returning. The next installment is scheduled for 2026 and is being developed by the original creators.

In 2026 it will mark twenty-five years since the original free platformer launched — a title that once became a staple of school computer classes and amassed an audience of some 40 million players. Creators Johan Peitrz and Anders “Neo” Svensson have revived interest in the project and invited renowned pixel-art artists Rudy Flores and Franka to join the team.

While the core endless-ascent concept remains intact, the new Icy Tower brings substantial upgrades. The tower will continually change so that each run feels distinct. Players will chain jump combos to rack up points and make use of a bounce mechanic. The visuals have been fully refreshed, animations are much smoother, the soundtrack was recorded live, and controls are tuned for high precision. The game will also introduce power-ups that can save you from a fall, replay-sharing features, and a roster of characters each with their own style.

The game will be released on Steam in 2026.
