“Dream Kojima” decides to tidy up the dirt paths surrounding his home as a neighborly greeting. While spraying water with a hose to settle the dust, the scenario takes a surreal turn.
“During this, I begin encountering the locals,” Kojima explains. “Most are voluptuous nude women who appear as if they’ve stepped out of figure sketches, or elderly men covered in scars who speak in foreign tongues.”
2017/1/4 Memo: This morning’s dream. I move alone to some hot spring town. The boarding house I end up living in has only a back entrance, and the area around it is surrounded by narrow alleyways…
The escalation of the dream is even more haunting. After finishing his chore, Kojima notices that the water has seemingly dissolved the soil, revealing four decomposing corpses buried beneath the path. He describes them as being arranged like synchronized swimmers, with only their upper torsos exposed in a neat row.
Attempting to remain rational, Dream Kojima heads for his room to call the authorities. However, the moment he turns his back, the corpses animate. With unsettling nonchalance, they shuffle into his living space and begin to relax as if they were the rightful owners of the home.
“Then the doorbell rings, signaling a new visitor,” Kojima continues. At that sound, the decaying bodies suddenly transform into young men wearing relay race uniforms. A man, presumably their coach, enters the room without removing his shoes and begins a fierce tirade against the athletes. Kojima notes, “What the coach was so angry about, I can no longer recall.”
The anecdote leaves us with a mountain of questions. What triggered the coach’s fury, and why was he so comfortable wearing shoes indoors? While we may never uncover the full contents of Kojima’s dream archives, this glimpse offers a fascinating look into the subconscious of the man currently shaping the next generation of gaming narratives.
