Renowned Japanese game designer Hideki Kamiya, the creative mind behind *Okami*, *Devil May Cry*, and *Bayonetta*, recently shared his thoughts on the Switch 2 in a new interview. During the discussion, he articulated his frustration regarding the hardware’s lack of a traditional D-pad.
“For some reason, in an era defined by diversity and choice, the manufacturer has persistently refused to offer a ‘D-pad Joy-Con’ option since the launch of the first Switch. This oversight conflicts with my personal habits, as I typically play while lying down… leaving me with no choice but to settle for the standard Joy-Con.”
Kamiya eventually devised a workaround by modifying a third-party peripheral to suit his needs:
“I managed for a while, playing a round of ‘Tetris 99’ every day, but I finally decided to fully commit to the Switch 2 as my primary console. I purchased a D-pad mini-grip from Cyber Gadget designed for the first Switch, which I then sanded down and modified to fit the Switch 2. At last, I can enjoy Arcade Archives 2 with my own custom ‘D-pad Joy-Con 2’.”
Hideki Kamiya emphasized that the absence of a proper directional pad on the Joy-Con significantly compromises his preferred gaming experience. He invited the community to discuss whether Nintendo missed an opportunity by failing to incorporate this feature into the Joy-Con 2.
