Winning ‘Fight’: Jabari Johnson & Krystal Broussard Top Gospel Chart

Jabari Johnson

Jabari Johnson’s “Fixed Fight,” featuring Krystal Broussard, rises to No. 1 on Billboard‘s Gospel Airplay chart (dated July 3).

The song is the first entry on the chart for each act and marks the second rookie single to lead Gospel Airplay this year, after Nia Allen’s “Wait (2020)” topped the May 1 tally. Before that, husband-and-wife duo Juan & Lisa Winans took its launch song, “It Belongs to Me,” featuring Marvin L. Winans (Juan’s uncle), to No. 1 for a week in November 2020.

Before striking out as a solo artist, Johnson, a Houston native, lent his skills as a vocalist and guitarist to acts including Ricky Dillard, Kirk Franklin and Tori Kelly.

Broussard is also a Texas native and has been a worship leader and youth pastor in the Houston area.

‘JUBILEE’ DEBUTS Maverick City Music’s Jubilee: Juneteenth Edition arrives at No. 2 on Top Gospel Albums and No. 8 on Top Christian Albums. Released June 18, it earned 3,000 equivalent album units in the tracking week ending June 24.

The worship music collective notches its ninth top 10 on Top Gospel Albums. It adds its fourth top 10 on Top Christian Albums.

The 19-song set follows Old Church Basement, the first collaborative album between Christian worship collective Elevation Worship, based in Charlotte, N.C., and the Atlanta-based Maverick City Music. The LP opened at No. 1 on both Top Christian Albums and Top Gospel Albums in May. It rules Top Gospel Albums for an eighth week and rebounds 2-1 for a fifth frame atop Top Christian Albums, with 6,000 units.

As Maverick City claims the top two spots on Top Gospel Albums, it’s the first non-solo act to achieve such a double since the chart became a weekly, MRC Data-based ranking in March 1995. Among soloists, Yolanda Adams and Kirk Franklin have held Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously for nine weeks each in that span; Aretha Franklin did so for two weeks; and Lecrae, for one.

Jubilee includes a mix of prominent acts in the Christian and gospel genres, including Dante BoweJekalyn Carr, Todd Dulaney, Koryn Hawthorne and Lecrae.
