Lay describes Halo’s design as a careful balance: deeply enjoyable, often playful gameplay that fuels an over-the-top superhuman fantasy, layered over a darker, surprisingly complex narrative. The franchise excels when those two elements coexist.
Where Halo 4 leaned heavily into a darker, grittier direction, Halo 5 took the story in a way that many found unfocused. The Banished offered a clearer, more cohesive enemy presence for subsequent mainline entries while preserving the series’ excitement.
Lay also recalls a striking moment during development: Blur produced cutscenes while the game was still being made that showed Atriox fighting — and defeating — three Spartans. The sequence surprised the team and underscored how pivotal Atriox’s introduction would be.
Halo: Combat Evolved is reportedly getting “some form” of a remaster as Xbox considers bringing the iconic FPS series to PS5 for the first time.
