Crate Entertainment has confirmed that Grim Dawn 2 is in development; however, the project is still in pre-planning and is not expected to launch before 2031 — roughly six years from now.
The sequel is being built on a new proprietary engine designed to enhance visuals, overhaul gameplay systems, and broaden the class roster, promising a substantial upgrade over the original.
On a podcast hosted by Path of Exile creator Chris Wilson, Crate’s CEO Arthur Bruno explained that the team has not yet begun core development on the ARPG. The studio is currently concentrating on the city-builder Farthest Frontier.
According to Bruno, the RTS project serves as an engine testbed; afterward, a separate build tailored for Grim Dawn 2 will be created.
“When I worked on the first game, we were limited by aging technology that had already started to show its age. Now we have the opportunity to craft an RPG on a completely new engine with markedly improved graphics.”
The developers intend to rework in-game systems, including how classes and items interact, to introduce more development paths and additional classes in future expansions. Despite these ambitious aims, launch remains a long-term prospect — no sooner than six years out.
