Yesterday at the PAX East 2025 exhibition in Boston, not only was the gameplay of Mafia: The Old Country showcased. Developers shared insights about their creation, and all necessary information was made available. The release date was announced, system requirements were revealed, covers and two new screenshots were published, pre-orders opened on the official website with pricing, and various bonuses were disclosed.

The gameplay trailer probably showed everything in the game: shootouts and knife fights, driving cars and riding horses, the combat system, and stealth. The release date, leaked online earlier, is confirmed — August 8, 2025, which is in three months.

More footage can be seen in additional videos where Hangar 13 staff explained why they chose Sicily in the 1900s instead of an American metropolis as the setting. They achieved this with the Unreal Engine 5, and characters were brought to life using MetaHuman technology.

Everyone interested should know that the Mafia prequel will not feature an open world. The creators are developing a more deeply crafted story, giving players the feeling of watching a classic gangster film.

Conclusions

Mafia: The Old Country looks stunning and seems very interesting, but something is unsettling. During the premiere, the thought passed that instead of a full-fledged fourth part, fans are offered a short prequel due to a more modest budget compared to contemporary titles. It is quite possible that Hangar 13 wanted to work on “Mafia 4,” but the higher-ups at 2K and Take-Two did not allocate sufficient funds for a large project, and now the American studio needs to prove they can be entrusted with the franchise’s development.

There is no open world to explore, no collector’s edition, not even 4K screenshots. Of course, no one expected something akin to what Rockstar Games recently did, but I think the new “Old Country” deserves a bit more attention from its own creators. However, that doesn’t mean gamers in general and fans in particular should do the same. We eagerly await the moment when we witness the birth of the legendary Cosa Nostra as we know it.
