Rockstar Games has issued a free next‑gen update for digital owners of the original Red Dead Redemption, but Xbox players quickly discovered they couldn’t upgrade their Xbox 360 digital copies to the Xbox Series X|S version. The developer has acknowledged the problem and says it is “working with Microsoft to resolve it.”

Players who own Red Dead Redemption and the Undead Nightmares DLC on PlayStation and Xbox will be — or will soon be — able to run the title on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S thanks to a compatibility upgrade. However, Xbox users immediately reported being blocked from receiving the free Series X|S upgrade and were left unsure how to proceed.

Rockstar Support posted on Twitter, “We are aware of an issue where Xbox players are unable to upgrade their digital Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption to the Xbox Series X|S version and are working with Microsoft to resolve it. Thank you for your patience.”

Some Xbox owners report (via PureXbox) that their store pages already show the free upgrade. Others say the store is displaying a message that grants access to the free update for only two weeks — a temporary storefront glitch that should be corrected once Microsoft and Rockstar resolve the underlying issue.

If you’re attempting the Xbox upgrade right now, the best course is to wait a short while; the free update should roll out to all affected accounts soon, and you’ll be able to enjoy the game on your newer hardware.

Red Dead Redemption 2 modders have revealed an “ambitious recreation of the Mexican territory from RDR1” that aims to remain faithful to Rockstar’s sequel — essentially functioning as a large, fan‑made DLC.
