While Bethesda Game Studios has yet to officially unveil the setting for The Elder Scrolls 6, the community has been rife with theories for years. However, according to Kurt Kuhlmann—a series veteran and former “loremaster”—the development team likely reached a consensus on the game’s location a long time ago.
In a recent conversation with PC Gamer, Kuhlmann looked back on the early planning stages. “Even back during the development of Fallout 4, there was already a shared understanding among a few of us,” he noted. While he admits that much can change over such a vast period, the core vision for the setting was established during those initial discussions.
Kuhlmann clarified that this “consensus” wasn’t a rigid corporate mandate, but rather an intuitive agreement among the creative leads. “We had a specific idea in mind. It wasn’t an argument; it was more like, ‘Well, obviously, this is where we go next.’ At that point, it was all about the atmosphere and the environment—the narrative details hadn’t even entered the picture yet.”
Despite these early inklings, it is worth noting that Kuhlmann hasn’t been directly involved in the series’ high-level world-building since the release of Skyrim. It is almost hard to believe that 14 years have passed since we first explored the Nord homeland, yet for dedicated fans, even these decades-old echoes of a plan feel like a precious discovery.
The wait has been a marathon for the community; seven years have vanished since the brief The Elder Scrolls 6 teaser premiered at E3 2018. Since that cinematic sweeping shot of a coastline, substantial news has been incredibly rare. Beyond minor references in interviews with Todd Howard or occasional charity auctions, official details about the RPG remain shrouded in mystery.
The most persistent theories suggest the game will take place in Hammerfell or High Rock. Personally, I find myself hoping for something as unconventional as the alien landscapes of Morrowind, complete with its unique sense of wonder and strange humor. Only time will reveal the truth—and judging by Bethesda’s current trajectory, we still have quite a wait ahead of us.
