First Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 7 Switch 2 Reviews Out: How Do the New Versions Perform?

The Resident Evil franchise is making a significant splash on the Nintendo Switch 2 this week with the launch of three titles, featuring newly optimized ports of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village. Early international reviews confirm these are comprehensive, high-fidelity versions of the games rather than stripped-back mobile adaptations.

Critics have been particularly effusive regarding Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition, hailing it as a masterclass in survival horror. They highlight the immersive first-person perspective, the suffocating atmosphere of the Baker estate, and the nail-biting tension of managing scarce resources. Visually, the port closely mirrors the performance seen on PlayStation and Xbox One, maintaining a stable 60 FPS with remarkably fast loading times. With all DLC included, the game is being described as a classic that has only improved with age.

Resident Evil Village has garnered a positive, if slightly more nuanced, reception. Capcom expanded on the foundations of its predecessor by introducing more kinetic gameplay and a diverse array of locales, including the titular village, the gothic Castle Dimitrescu, the unsettling House Beneviento, Heisenberg’s industrial factory, and Moreau’s dismal reservoirs. The Gold Edition packs in the Shadows of Rose expansion, Mercenaries mode, and a third-person camera option. While the Switch version remains impressively smooth when docked, some reviewers noted occasional frame rate fluctuations in expansive outdoor areas during handheld play.
