
“For example, the setting, the worldbuilding, the characters and the narrative are all handled superbly, alongside the gameplay,” Hamaguchi explained. “They come together in a way that resonates with players — and that shows in how well the game was received and sold.”
He also noted that some of the Clair Obscur team visited Square Enix’s offices, an experience he found inspiring. “You can tell they have a lot of respect for the genre. Not only did they make a terrific game, but they honored the classic turn‑based JRPG tradition while bringing something new to it. As Japanese creators, we’re thrilled to see that kind of thoughtful innovation.”
Now someone just needs to ask Hamaguchi whether he agrees that the true 2025 GOTY is Megabonk.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s director added that “however much AI might try and intrude and take part in the creative side of things,” his team aspires to be “skilled enough creators” to outpace AI’s contributions.
