The current playable roster includes Capcom legends like Ryu, Zero (in his Mega Man Zero form), and Tessa from Red Earth. Characters such as Hugo, B.B. Hood, and Breath of Fire’s Scias are also in development. On the Square side, players can control Agrias Oaks from Final Fantasy Tactics, Han from Ehrgeiz, and the charmingly obscure Tiki from The NewZealand Story. Future updates are expected to add Sundown Kid, Chrono, and Dragon Quest’s Alena, along with four teased secret fighters.
Fan-led projects like this often outshine official releases by embracing niche characters. It is highly unlikely that a corporate-driven project would ever feature deep cuts like Sundown Kid or Agrias in a primary roster, highlighting the creative freedom of the fighting game community.
This has been an exceptional week for Capcom crossover enthusiasts. Another project, Sega vs Capcom: The Next Level, recently debuted a new trailer showcasing Vyse from Skies of Arcadia and Darkstalkers’ Morrigan joining a lineup that already includes Sonic and Mega Man. For those who have long dreamed of a Sega-Capcom clash, these projects are a vivid demonstration of the potential both companies are leaving on the table. Sega vs Capcom is slated for a full release this summer, while a final launch date for the complete Capcom vs Square roster is still pending.
In related news, the original Final Fantasy Tactics director admitted he “underestimated” the enduring popularity of The Ivalice Chronicles.
