In the latest entry of the franchise, the diplomacy mechanics have been reworked.
The team behind the grand strategy Europa Universalis 5 published a new development diary. This edition turns the spotlight on diplomacy.
Diplomacy in EU5 has been redesigned: previously it relied on a fixed pool of diplomats, each capable of performing a single action at a time.
Diplomats now serve as a form of “diplomatic currency”:
- Diplomatic actions require a diplomat (proposing an alliance, arranging a dynastic marriage, declaring war, etc.). Long-term diplomatic efforts—such as improving relations, courting favor, or establishing a spy network—will consume diplomats each month as upkeep.
- The number of diplomats and the rate at which you gain new ones depend on a nation’s rank, civic values, certain upgrades, diplomatic spending, and the construction of Royal Gardens in the capital.
- There is a “diplomatic range” — a value that determines how far your diplomats can operate. This range expands during play through upgrades and by increasing a nation’s rank.
Europa Universalis 5 is scheduled for release on November 4, 2025.
