Shortly after celebrating her fourth chart-topping single, “Drop Dead,” Olivia Rodrigo has received a glowing endorsement from pop staple Niall Horan.

In an insightful April 30 interview with Rolling Stone, the former One Direction standout discussed his evolving songwriting philosophy, specifically highlighting the resurgence of the pop bridge—a trend he largely attributes to Rodrigo’s influence.

“It’s truly refreshing to hear bridges make a comeback, and Olivia has been a major catalyst for that shift among pop songwriters,” Horan noted, briefly humming the bridge to “Drivers License.” He continued, “What captivates me about Olivia’s catalog is the sense of unpredictability; you start with one sound, and it completely pivots. It shifts gears musically, introduces a bridge, and experiments with unique breakdowns. Whatever magic she and Dan Nigro are conjuring in the studio, it’s clearly resonating—and it’s certainly left an impression on my own creative process.”

Horan also offered a glimpse into his highly anticipated new record, Dinner Party, scheduled for a June 5 release via Capitol Records. Having already teased the project with its title track and “Little More Time”—both produced by a collaborative team including Afterhrs, John Ryan, and Julian Bunetta—the artist is preparing for an extensive 22-date tour across Ireland, the U.K., and Europe. The album follows his successful 2023 release, The Show, and features a distinct rock edge, influenced by his lifelong affinity for acts like Blink-182.

“We were chasing that specific drum texture reminiscent of the late ’90s and early 2000s punk scene,” Horan explained. “Rock music has been a constant companion since my childhood. While I’m inherently a pop songwriter, dressing those tracks in grittier arrangements is a thrill. My mindset has shifted toward live performance; reading comments online can only tell you so much, but seeing a crowd react in real-time is invaluable. The rock-infused tracks always ignite the most energy in the room.”

Looking ahead, Horan is set to bring his live show to U.S. stadiums, including dates at Nashville’s GEODIS Park and Hershey, Pa.’s Hersheypark Stadium, supported by Thomas Rhett. As he embarks on this tour, all four former One Direction members remain active on the road. Reflecting on his peers’ success, Horan expressed sincere pride: “Catching Harry’s show a while back was an incredible experience—the atmosphere was electric, reminiscent of our 1D stadium days. Watching the boys pursue their passions and cultivate such dedicated communities is genuinely inspiring. I’m hoping to catch Louis live in the coming weeks.”

Horan rounds out a busy year for the former bandmates, following recent album releases from Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and ZAYN.
