Joe Jonas Reveals Therapy Following Underperforming Solo Album
How Joe Jonas Overcame the Anxiety and Physical Pain Caused by His Solo Debut

Joe Jonas has opened up about how the underwhelming commercial reception of his 2011 solo debut, Fastlife, triggered intense panic attacks and physical ailments that ultimately drove him to seek professional mental health support.
Speaking on a recent installment of the Hey Jonas! podcast—which he hosts alongside his brothers and bandmates, Nick and Kevin—the pop star reflected on the overwhelming pressure he felt at the time. He admitted that he had measured his personal self-worth entirely against the massive chart success the Jonas Brothers had experienced at their zenith. “Deep down, I felt like, ‘If this record succeeds, then my existence matters,'” he shared with his siblings.
Fastlife ultimately peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200, while its lead single, “See No More,” stalled at No. 92 on the Hot 100—outcomes that left the artist deeply discouraged.
“I began suffering from severe panic attacks and unexplained physical pain,” he recalled. After a medical evaluation confirmed he was in good physical health, a physician strongly advised him to consult a therapist—a recommendation Joe initially met with stubborn resistance. “My immediate reaction was denial. I thought, ‘What do you mean a therapist? I don’t need a therapist,'” he explained, noting that he initially tried to cope by going on long bicycle rides to disconnect from his phone.
Fortunately, Jonas eventually found remarkable career redemption. In 2015, he launched the funk-pop ensemble DNCE, whose breakout anthem “Cake by the Ocean” soared to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, securing the mainstream radio dominance that had previously eluded both his solo endeavors and the early years of the Jonas Brothers. The beloved family band later staged a triumphant return in 2019, claiming their first-ever Billboard 200 No. 1 album with Happiness Begins, propelled by the chart-topping smash single “Sucker.”
