Following their analysis of the console builds of The Outer Worlds 2, Digital Foundry’s experts put the game through tests on PC.
The investigation shows that Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen system continues to present significant challenges for Obsidian. With hardware ray tracing enabled, the game exhibits pronounced noise in the shadows — a problem reminiscent of the issues seen in Avowed. This artifact is especially noticeable at the 1:47 mark in the released video.
On “Very High” settings with hardware ray tracing enabled, visuals can sometimes appear worse than on “High” settings. Reviewers described this as absurd and said it warrants an urgent patch to correct the shadow rendering.
Digital Foundry also warns that the game is extremely demanding on hardware when running at maximum graphics. The team recommends using medium-to-high settings to preserve a stable framerate; their recommended configuration is demonstrated at 8:20 in the video.
The editors also remind readers that prior comparisons of the console versions revealed similar graphical problems on the PS5 and PS5 Pro.
