Set in a sprawling post-apocalyptic frontier, Darkhaven takes players through lands reclaimed by nature after the collapse of ancient civilizations. According to the game’s Steam page, interdimensional rifts allow monstrous entities to invade, leaving physical remnants of these incursions long after the battle ends. Moon Beast is implementing complex “ecological rules” for diverse biomes—ranging from volcanic peaks to stagnant marshes—to provide a rich, immersive sense of history throughout the world map.
“In Darkhaven, we’re moving away from incremental percentage boosts. We want gear that fundamentally alters your strategy and forces you to rethink your entire build,” explained Moon Beast President Peter Hu. Combat in the title is designed to reward tactical positioning and clever ability usage rather than mindlessly grinding for stats. Billed as a “next-generation ARPG,” the game features fully destructible, procedurally generated environments, ensuring that no two expeditions feel the same.
Visually and mechanically, Darkhaven appears to be the ambitious evolution of the Diablo formula fans have been waiting for. The developers intend to launch via Early Access, supported by a Kickstarter campaign set to go live in the near future.
In related news: The lead developer of No Rest for the Wicked recently criticized the “irreparable damage” done to the Diablo franchise under former Blizzard leadership.
