
Diablo 4 itself appears to be holding steady. At the time of the interview, the ARPG had 36,116 concurrent players on Steam, according to SteamDB (not far from its all‑time peak of 55,561), and Blizzard has scheduled the next major expansion for 2026. Still, Brevik says the constraints around major live services and high expectations remain a concern.
“Anytime you have a huge game and you change something, some segment of the audience will be unhappy,” he explains. “When you’re that popular, expectations skyrocket.”
Those expectations can make developers wary of making adjustments: “It becomes really stressful to do anything,” he adds. His advice is to stay true to the vision behind the game.
“You have to set that pressure aside,” Brevik continues. “Say, ‘I believe in the direction we’re taking and I stand by what we’re building.’”
