Marking a historic first for the series, the Warlock commands three distinct demonic summons: the Goatman, the Tainted, and the Defiler. Each minion possesses specialized combat skills to support the player. However, as Diablo 2 Resurrected producer Matthew Cederquist explained via Xbox Wire, the class’s mechanical depth lies in “binding.” Players can bind a single demon and decide when to sacrifice it for temporary, game-changing buffs. “The strategy involves choosing between the demon’s active utility or devouring it at a critical moment to turn the tide of battle,” Cederquist noted.

The developer highlighted that the Warlock is built for players who enjoy foresight, encounter planning, and tactical experimentation.

For those who prefer a more aggressive approach, the class also features a melee-oriented branch. This allows Warlocks to brandish heavy two-handed weaponry alongside their grimoires, creating a hybrid playstyle that Cederquist claims “redefines existing theorycrafting.” He also noted that this build is a deliberate tribute to the Hexblade Warlock archetype from Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

Having played Diablo 2 for a quarter of a century—and still favoring it over modern entries—I found the idea of new content for such a veteran title to be a dream. Emerging from the Rogue Encampment as an entirely new archetype for the first time since childhood feels truly transformative. Sanctuary has never felt more enticing.

Looking for more? Diablo 4 is reintroducing killstreaks ahead of Season 12, featuring bloodied items to help you rain destruction.
