Dan Houser reveals plans to create a video game based on American Caper

During a recent visit to the UK, Dan Houser spoke with The Guardian, confirming that a third major franchise is currently in development at his new studio, Absurd Ventures. Following the earlier reveals of Aburdaverse and A Better Paradise, the next title destined for consoles and PC appears to be American Caper. This IP has already established a presence through an ongoing comic book series, with the third issue arriving in just ten days. While the project inevitably invites comparisons to the Grand Theft Auto series, Houser clarified that it will offer a significantly different experience.

“I am not creating an open-world game. We are considering a much stronger emphasis on narrative, though we are still exploring various creative avenues.”

Houser elaborated on his desire to break away from the homogenization seen in modern big-budget titles:

“Our goal is to be ambitious and innovate. In many respects, these are traditional console games, yet we are striving for something distinct. A few years ago, while watching PlayStation showcases, it was often difficult to tell where one game ended and the next began if you blinked during the transitions. Everything seemed to involve space ninjas, dark purple palettes, and apocalyptic themes—they all felt remarkably similar.

That’s fine; some are truly incredible games. However, we are building from the ground up with a finite budget. We must prioritize compelling stories, engaging dialogue, and stellar gameplay. We want players to feel they are experiencing something entirely fresh. Ultimately, we want to captivate a broad audience that extends beyond just the core gaming community.”
