Next year, fans of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay tabletop game will be able to get the fifth edition of the rules — fully compatible with fourth‑edition books — which brings a host of refinements and an expansive mega‑campaign.
In 2026 Cubicle 7 will not only mark the 40th anniversary of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, but will also publish the fifth edition of the tabletop RPG set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battle universe (commonly known as The Old World).
According to Dominic McDowell, head of creative and design, the fifth edition is an “evolution, not a revolution” of the familiar fourth‑edition rules. Ensuring backward compatibility with existing supplements was “one of the team’s key priorities.”
The developers focused on streamlining gameplay and fixing troublesome areas. Cubicle 7 reduced the number of “special-case” rules whose payoff didn’t justify the added complexity, reworked combat so encounters flow more smoothly and are easier to track, and tuned the system to feel slightly more lethal.
For instance, there are fewer ways to negate critical hits now, so combat feels more dangerous. Talents have been narrowed to specific domains and are designed to excel at a single purpose, preventing overlapping bonuses.
Designers have consolidated Resilience and Resolve into Fate and Fortune to reduce the number of tracked resources. In addition, players can look forward to a mega‑campaign that links multiple adventure supplements.
The team is already well underway with development, and the designers recently finished playtesting the first instalment.
