Creators of Wreckreation, the Spiritual Successor to Burnout, Lay Off Entire Team After Funding Cuts

Wreckreation failed to attract a substantial audience, and the studio no longer has the funds to continue operating.

The developers of the arcade driving game Wreckreation announced a difficult decision — the entire team at Three Fields Entertainment has been let go. According to Fiona Sperry, the move was unavoidable due to financial strain and the withdrawal of funding from publisher THQ Nordic. In a post on social media, the studio’s co‑founder and CEO called the situation “one of the hardest” of her career.

“I am immensely proud of the people I worked with and of the passion they poured into this project. But the reality has been harsh. As an independent studio, we are not seeing game sales revenue in the foreseeable future. We ended up self‑funding much of this year and all post‑release content. Without the publisher’s enthusiasm and financial backing, we simply cannot keep the studio running in its current form. This decision was unbelievably difficult.”

According to Sperry, the problems began even before launch — the publisher agreement is structured so that all sales revenue initially goes to THQ Nordic. Until the publisher repays its investment, the studio has no access to the profits.

Despite the crisis, the team kept releasing updates and was preparing a major patch to add crossplay support, which is still planned for release before the end of the year. Attached to her statement, Fiona Sperry included a video demonstrating the planned features — hoping it will catch the eye of potential investors and give the studio a chance at recovery.

“I sincerely hope that by sharing our work publicly someone will recognize its potential — and perhaps a new opportunity will emerge. But even if that doesn’t happen, we want this work to remain a testament to our vision, resilience, passion, and the craftsmanship of our small team. I truly believe in this game’s potential and in the talent of the people who created it.”

Three Fields Entertainment was founded by former Burnout developers Fiona Sperry and Alex Ward. Wreckreation was intended as a revival of the chaotic crashes and freewheeling spirit of arcade racing. However, the game failed to win a wide audience: its peak concurrent player count on Steam after launch was just 199, and it currently hovers around 10–15 players.
