FromSoftware’s acclaimed samurai epic, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, is officially transitioning to the screen with a new anime adaptation titled Sekiro: No Defeat. Set to debut as a Crunchyroll exclusive, the series is being brought to life through a collaboration between Arch, Qzil.la, and Studio Betta. A recently unveiled trailer offers a more profound and atmospheric glimpse into this animated retelling, promising a faithful yet artistically distinct experience.
Debuting at SXSW, the second trailer for Sekiro: No Defeat leans heavily into its evocative, hand-drawn aesthetic, capturing the grim “death and rebirth” cycle that defined the award-winning video game. The footage serves as a highlight reel of legendary encounters, showcasing reimagined battles against iconic bosses such as Great Shinobi Owl, Gyoubu Oniwa, Genichiro Ashina, the Corrupted Monk, and the elusive Folding Screen Monkeys. It is clear from the visuals that the series will not shy away from the visceral violence and blood-soaked duels inherent to the Shinobi’s journey.
Crunchyroll has shared an official synopsis for the upcoming series:
Japan is a land fractured, torn apart by relentless internal conflict. At its heart lies Ashina, a territory steeped in ancient mystery and sacred power. Two decades after the legendary Sword Saint Isshin Ashina seized the land in a violent uprising, the region faces a dire new threat from the Interior Ministry. Driven to desperation to save his legacy, Isshin’s grandson, Genichiro, turns to forbidden, supernatural powers. The nation’s only hope rests with a kidnapped boy—the Divine Heir—and his silent, steadfast guardian: a shinobi known as Sekiro.
This is the chronicle of a master and his servant, and their perilous mission to bring order to a country on the brink of collapse.
Director Kenichi Kutsuna has expressed a deep commitment to the project’s visual identity, noting: “By prioritizing the hand-drawn soul of 2D animation, we can achieve a level of transcendent beauty in the action sequences that moves beyond simple spectacle to become something truly poignant.”
Sekiro: No Defeat is currently slated to begin streaming on Crunchyroll in 2026. However, a recent social media update from the platform suggests the premiere may be “coming soon,” sparking hope among fans for an earlier arrival.
