“The Indie Game Awards maintains a firm stance against the use of generative AI throughout the entire nomination and ceremony process,” the organization stated. “During the submission phase, a Sandfall Interactive representative confirmed that no generative AI was utilized. However, following the studio’s confirmation of using AI-generated art during production on the day of the premiere, *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* has been disqualified.”

The controversy first surfaced when players identified what appeared to be AI-generated textures in specific areas of the game. Once these findings gained traction online, Sandfall quietly released a patch to replace the assets without making a public statement.

“While the assets in question have since been removed and we recognize this is an exceptional game, the use of such tools remains a violation of our established regulations. Consequently, the selection committee has decided to officially retract both the Debut Game and Game of the Year awards,” the statement continued.

In light of the disqualification, the Game of the Year award has been reassigned to the critically acclaimed Blue Prince, while Sorry We’re Closed has taken the title for Debut Game.

“We value the craft of game creation over the logistics of management,” says the lead behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, noting that limitations often drive creativity and the studio has no plans to expand for future projects.
