The 1992 original is a masterclass in atmospheric dread, tasking players with escaping a malevolent mansion in 1920s Louisiana. Its sequel, while leaning further into action, continues the journey of Edward Carnby as he faces off against supernatural mobsters and spectral pirates. The trilogy concludes with Alone in the Dark 3, which sends Carnby to a cursed Western town to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a film crew.

These titles are widely recognized as the progenitors of the 3D survival horror genre, establishing the blueprint long before Resident Evil or Silent Hill arrived on the scene. Despite its historical significance, the franchise has struggled to find its footing in the modern era. A high-profile 2024 reboot starring Jodie Comer and David Harbour received a lukewarm critical reception and failed to meet sales targets. This commercial disappointment ultimately led to the closure of Pieces Interactive, the studio behind the reimagining.
If you wish to experience the origins of survival horror at no cost, you have until Thursday, February 5, at 9:00 AM ET to claim the collection on GOG.
