Bungie’s Marathon Is Already Facing Criticism: Will It Repeat the Failure of Concord?
Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bungie’s parent company, has pinned high hopes on the upcoming shooter Marathon. However, the title is already attracting heavy scrutiny, leading many to speculate whether it will become the next Concord—one of the gaming industry’s most notorious recent stumbles.
Across Steam, numerous users are voicing frustrations over tedious gameplay, lackluster loot, and a user interface widely labeled as one of the worst in years. Critics also point to cramped, uninspired map designs and poor performance on mid-range hardware. Even YouTuber DreamcastGuy, a devoted PlayStation supporter with 248,000 subscribers, admitted his disappointment with the experience, slamming the clunky menu system and awarding the current build a mediocre 7.5/10.
While a 7.5 is respectable, it may not be enough to carve out a niche in a crowded extraction shooter market dominated by evolving titles like ARC Raiders. With a $40 price tag, Bungie and Sony face a steep uphill climb to achieve commercial viability. The final verdict will arrive when the game officially launches on March 5, 2026.
