Some contemporary releases now carry budgets that can rival Hollywood films.

Shacknews recently released the documentary “24 ‘Til Launch: The Making of Borderlands 4.” Gearbox’s chief spoke with reporters and shared his perspective on several topics.

Randy Pitchford believes the games industry hasn’t yet reached its full potential and notes that budgets are rising—sometimes exceeding those of major films:

The budgets for our major video games now exceed those of blockbusters. It’s difficult to justify dedicating that level of resources to a project. That only happens when everyone involved is convinced that what you’re imagining will provide more value to the world than the cost to build it. In practice, that requires both sides to understand what’s needed to create it, to believe in what’s required to make it, and to grasp what it might cost if it comes to fruition.

The creator also says the industry hasn’t yet produced its own “Citizen Kane” (a canonical masterpiece), and developers are still exploring the possibilities of interactive entertainment:

I like that we’re just getting started as an industry. We don’t even have our own “Citizen Kane” yet, let alone a “Jurassic Park” or “Star Wars.” We’re only beginning to work this all out. But it’s exciting.
