This achievement marks the first time in over twenty years that a Battlefield launch has outperformed a Call of Duty entry. To put this into perspective, since 2009, only three titles have ever managed to beat the annual CoD juggernaut to the top spot: GTA 5 in 2013, Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, and Hogwarts Legacy in 2023.

Furthermore, this is the first instance since 2008—when Call of Duty: World at War faced intense pressure from GTA 4 and several Wii titles—that the franchise has failed to secure at least a top-two finish.

Industry experts suggest that “franchise fatigue” played a significant role in Black Ops 7’s lower-than-expected performance, though a poor critical reception certainly didn’t help. The latest Call of Duty installment is currently burdened with “Mostly Negative” user reviews on Steam and holds some of the lowest Metacritic scores in the history of the series.

In response to shifting trends, Activision recently announced: “We are moving away from back-to-back releases of the Modern Warfare and Black Ops sub-brands to ensure every annual launch offers a truly distinct and unique experience.”
