The show’s creators have confirmed that the narrative’s conclusion was heavily influenced by Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3—an experience Matt Duffer was deeply immersed in throughout the writing process.
In a recent conversation with Variety, the Duffer brothers revealed that they drew inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3 when shaping the show’s core themes. According to the duo, Matt Duffer spent a significant amount of time exploring the RPG while the script was being developed.
“We were brainstorming D&D elements while I was playing Baldur’s Gate 3, and it became clear that the only path to defeating a great evil is through the collective effort of a unified team.”
Matt also pointed out that for the finale to work, every character had to be “emotionally prepared,” having resolved their internal traumas and embraced their true selves:
“Each character is fully realized—whether through self-acceptance or by overcoming their personal hurdles—and they enter the ultimate battle as a completely cohesive unit. Everyone possesses unique skills, which is a direct callback to Dungeons & Dragons and games like Baldur’s Gate.”
This synergy is evident on screen; the climax of Stranger Things evokes the feeling of a classic party-based showdown against a final boss, a dynamic familiar to fans of Baldur’s Gate 3 and other iconic RPGs. It seems the game’s influence is successfully crossing over into mainstream television.
