The Writers Guild of America will cease honoring video game writing in its yearly awards.
According to a Writers Guild of America (WGA), the union will now not honor video game writing till there’s a “critical mass” of games coated by the WGA.
“There won’t be a Videogame Writing Award in 2020,” a WGA spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “However, the category will be reinstated when there is a critical mass of video games covered by the WGA in order to provide a meaningful award selection process.”
WGA has honored games writing since 2008. The first award in the video games writing class went to D3Publishing’s Dead Head Fred, penned by Dave Ellis and Adam Cogan, and developed by Vicious Cycle.
The award went to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed the next yr, beating out Red Alert 3, Fallout Three and Tomb Raider: Underworld.
In subsequent years, winners included: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Uncharted 3, Assassin’s Creed: Liberation, The Last of Us, The Last of Us: Left Behind, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn, and God of War.
