Criticism won’t faze Arc Raiders art director Robert Sammelin — his child has already given him the harshest review. In the new series The Evolution of Arc Raiders, Sammelin recounts how his youngster reacted skeptically to Embark Studios’ concept for a third‑person extraction shooter.
In the YouTube segment, Sammelin details how Embark shaped Arc Raiders’ world. “We wanted to create something that was uniquely ours,” he says. “Many wanted to lean into fantastical, sci‑fi direction because it’s familiar and well-liked, but the real challenge was forging our own path.”
Embark wasn’t the only studio to spot that overlap, and Sammelin’s child didn’t hold back — delivering a roast the artist has since laughed off. “Even my kid, who was 12 at the time,” Sammelin recalls, “was like, ‘New studio? Sci‑fi game? Very original.'”
Still, it’s possible to stand out and score in a saturated market.
Arc Raiders patches down a weapon once described as “capable of outgunning full squads,” and even responded to a fan who asked to show 600+ rubber ducks: “Your Raider Den has been ducked out.”
