Ubisoft Prioritizes Player-Facing Generative AI as Other Developers Focus on Production Tools

CEO Yves Guillemot has previously suggested that AI could make massive environments feel more personal and less tied to rigid, pre-scripted events. However, critics remain skeptical, fearing that replacing handcrafted design with generative algorithms might turn 100-hour open-world journeys into repetitive, soul-less experiences.

Nexon CEO Junghun Lee recently remarked that AI adoption is now an industry-wide assumption. Yet, legendary figures like Hideo Kojima, Todd Howard, and Gabe Newell still view AI primarily as a supplementary tool rather than a substitute for human creativity. Ubisoft appears ready to test the opposite hypothesis.

Reflecting on this trend, the actor behind Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 noted that technology cannot replicate the “human” nuance of a hit RPG, claiming AI simply cannot capture the subtle, chaotic, and emotionally resonant qualities that make a performance truly memorable.
