Ubisoft Is Helping Nintendo Improve VRR for All Switch 2 Games

The publisher has already launched Star Wars: Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows on the upcoming platform.

Ubisoft has successfully adapted Star Wars: Outlaws, developed by Massive Entertainment, and Ubisoft Toronto’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows for the Switch 2 hybrid hardware.

Of particular interest is Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which debuted on the Switch 2 in early December. The game maintains a stable 30 frames per second while offering full Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support—a feature that, according to official technical specifications, is typically only functional at 40 FPS or higher.

In a recent interview with the French publication FRVR, Ubisoft representatives detailed the technical ingenuity behind this achievement.

We utilize a sophisticated workaround: the same frame is essentially rendered twice—once mid-interval and once at the end. This allows the console to output a 60Hz signal, preserving perceived motion fluidity even though the actual performance remains at a 30 FPS target.

A similar rendering method is employed in Star Wars: Outlaws. Furthermore, Ubisoft indicated they are collaborating closely with Nintendo to explore integrating this algorithm at the system level. If successful, VRR functionality below the 40Hz threshold could become available for all software on the Switch 2.

While there is no official timeline for a system-wide rollout, Ubisoft has already integrated this technology as a standard feature within its proprietary Anvil engine.
