Even though a decade has passed since the last mainline release and Fallout 5 remains a distant prospect, Bethesda head Todd Howard has confirmed that several unannounced projects within the post-apocalyptic universe are currently in development.
While Bethesda’s portfolio is widely acclaimed, fans have learned to be patient regarding sequels. The studio typically focuses its primary resources on one major title at a time, currently juggling three massive intellectual properties: The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield. This concentrated approach often leads to agonizingly long waits. Given the overwhelming success of the recent Fallout TV adaptation, the absence of a new game to capitalize on that momentum has been particularly noticeable.
In a recent interview with GameInformer, Howard addressed the franchise’s future. “Fallout is actually the series where we are doing the most work right now,” he stated. While much of this labor naturally supports the television series, Howard hinted at secret gaming endeavors: “The core internal team is presently dedicated to The Elder Scrolls VI, but we are also exploring other Fallout-related projects that haven’t been revealed yet. Their time will come.”
Howard also highlighted the continued evolution of Fallout 76, noting that a dedicated team has been working on the title without interruption for years. However, he acknowledged that the core community is primarily yearning for a new, single-player epic that captures the spirit of the original mainline entries.
Following the massive cultural impact of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the critical acclaim of the TV show, there is a clear appetite for a return to the classic CRPG roots of the pre-Bethesda era. Whether or not that is in the cards remains to be seen, but the wasteland clearly has more stories to tell.
Bethesda’s design director has expressed interest in creating a Fallout 5 that players could get lost in for over 600 hours, claiming, “that’s exactly the kind of experience we strive to create.”
