Playground Games, the acclaimed studio behind the Forza Horizon franchise, has finally pulled back the curtain on its highly anticipated Fable reboot. After years of speculation following its initial 2017 teaser, the developer confirmed during today’s Xbox Developer Direct that the wait is nearly over: Albion will be open for exploration this autumn.
Game Director Ralph Fulton took the stage to provide an in-depth look at gameplay, paying homage to the foundation laid by the original creators at Lionhead Studios. Fulton described the project as a fresh start for the franchise—a sprawling, open-world action RPG that aims to honor the legacy of the original trilogy while pushing the genre forward with modern technical prowess.
A Hero’s Journey and a Living World
In keeping with series tradition, your story begins in childhood. However, the peace of your home village, Briar Hill, is shattered by a mystical disaster that petrifies the inhabitants—including your character’s grandmother. This tragedy propels you into a world where you are a “rare hero,” the first to emerge in generations. Players will have access to the open world relatively early, finding themselves thrust into a power struggle between two formidable rival factions.
The visual showcase highlighted a breathtaking Albion, featuring everything from imposing medieval fortresses and idyllic meadows to surreal forests filled with bioluminescent mushrooms and gargantuan vegetables. While the protagonist was seen traversing the landscape on horseback, long-time fans may notice one omission: the iconic pet dog from Fable II and III has yet to make an appearance.

Combat, Customization, and Creative Chaos
Central to the experience is the question: “What does it mean to be a hero?” Players can fully customize their protagonist’s physical appearance and wardrobe to reflect their personal style. Combat appears to be an evolution of the classic systems, blending melee strikes, ranged precision, and devastating magic. The footage showcased fluid combos, cinematic finishers, and the return of whimsical spells—including the ability to transform terrifying foes into harmless chickens. Beyond standard enemies like Hobs, the hero was even seen squaring off against a massive, fire-breathing poultry beast.

The Social Simulation of Albion
The depth of the world extends far beyond combat. Playground Games has populated Albion with over 1,000 unique, named NPCs, each possessing individual schedules and reactions to the player’s behavior. You can observe any citizen as they wake up, head to work, and retire for the evening. The simulation includes robust social systems where you can purchase businesses, acquire real estate, and even start a family.
Your reputation will precede you. Own a home and your tenants will treat you like a landlord—for better or worse. Choosing to evict residents will leave them homeless and rightfully resentful, while your overall fame (or infamy) will result in cheers or jeers as you walk through town. This reactive system appears significantly more nuanced than in previous entries, with your specific choices dictating how the population perceives your legacy.

Choices That Leave a Mark
Playground is emphasizing the permanence of player agency. Some decisions will fundamentally alter the physical geography of the game. For instance, players will encounter a giant voiced by British comedian Richard Ayoade. Should you choose to kill him, his gargantuan corpse will remain in the world indefinitely, serving as a permanent landmark that even influences local property values and the surrounding ecosystem.
While the developers are leaning into the “play your way” philosophy, the true test will be whether they can capture the distinct, dry wit that defined the original games. With talent like Ayoade on board, the comedic potential is high. We will see if this new vision for Albion hits the mark when Fable launches in late 2026.
