Terraria and Don’t Starve are swapping monsters for Halloween season

Survival sims Don’t Starve and Terraria have always had spooky themes. I mean, one of the playable characters in the former is a young girl who can summon the ghost of her twin sister. Now the two games are doing a crossover for Halloween. So far, it looks to be in the form of a monster from each indie game making a visit to the other popular indie.

The Terraria team announced the crossover on Twitter by sharing a clip of Don’t Starve’s Wilson encountering the Eye of Cthulhu, a boss from Terraria. Wilson looks properly haunted by the emergence. Klei Entertainment, the studio behind Don’t Starve, responded in kind with a clip of the fearsome Deerclops making its pixelated debut.

It will be interesting to see how these enemies are actually incorporated into gameplay, or whether they’re just fun little Easter eggs. Each of these are pretty iconic monsters — ones that have become symbolic of early challenges that players will face in these tough survival sims.

Eye of Cthulhu is Terraria’s first boss, and a true test of player mettle. And any Don’t Starve player knows just how frustrating it can be to encounter the Deerclops — it shows up in winter, and it can destroy large parts of a player’s painstakingly designed encampment in just a few stomps.

This crossover is one of several fun, recent announcements from Terraria developer Re-Logic. It comes on the heels of a Re-Logic developer posting to the game’s Steam page to note that Terraria is currently being optimized for the Steam deck, as reported by Destructoid.
