Independent Norwegian studio Filiokus has officially released a public demo for Talystro. This unique roguelite deckbuilder invites players to look at combat through the lens of arithmetic. Instead of standard health points and damage values, the game turns mathematics into your primary weapon against an army of corrupted numbers. You take on the role of the Math Mouse, an unlikely hero standing against the evil Necrodicer in a world brought to life through charming hand-drawn animations.
The core mechanics of Talystro depart from traditional combat systems. You do not slowly chip away at an opponent’s health. To win, you must match the exact value of your enemy to defeat them instantly. Every card in your hand contains unfinished calculations, variables, and various modifiers. Dice rolls dynamically shape the possibilities available to you each turn. Success requires a deep understanding of the order of operations and the ability to adapt to shifting probabilities. Every encounter is a puzzle that demands strategic thinking and creative problem solving.
This demo grants players access to the Wildlands, which serves as the first act of the game world. You can progress through seven distinct levels, eventually facing a formidable boss that tests everything you have learned. The demo includes both Normal and Expert modes for those who want a steeper challenge right from the start. A full run takes approximately 45 minutes and is packed with meaningful decisions. The experience is designed to be accessible, with no time pressure or complex camera movements to distract you from the tactical gameplay.
The developers at Filiokus believe that mathematics is a fundamentally creative tool. Martin Lothe Sæterdal explained that they want players to experiment and discover the beauty of logical challenges through play. The project has evolved significantly since its earlier builds, now featuring full music and sound design that add personality to the atmosphere. The hand-drawn animation style has been expanded to cover every moment of the flow, making the combat feel alive and responsive.
The Talystro demo is currently available for download on Steam. While you explore the Wildlands and master the arithmetic combat, the full version remains in active development. Filiokus plans to launch the complete game later in 2026. This second title from the studio continues their mission to rethink educational concepts by blending probability and play into a meaningful experience. You can add the game to your wishlist now to stay updated on its progress toward a full release.
