Steven Ogg, who played Trevor in GTA 5, appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, where they discussed various topics: acting, depression, and farting. Of course, the conversation also touched on his work on the most successful entertainment product in history. Steve, who has never really played video games (in his childhood, he enjoyed Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Galaxy Game, but now he’s just not into video games), refuted the widespread opinion in the gaming community that he supposedly hates his character.
Most likely, I replied to someone that my name is not Trevor. My name is Steven. When people call you by your character’s name, it’s strange. As if I am a caricature like a video game character. And then it started: “He hates Trevor. He hates GTA. Don’t call him Trevor. He’s furious.”
The actor also admitted that the popularity brought to him by Grand Theft Auto V and the series he’s appeared in hasn’t changed him. Yes, his recognizability has grown, but overall it hasn’t had much of an impact on his life.
In addition, Steve talked about the nuances of working with motion capture. In a spandex suit with lots of marker balls and a helmet with a camera in front of his face, you can’t touch or even get close to other actors. However, you quickly adapt and get used to it. The whole process was supposed to take the team a year, but it took three! The shooting schedule was divided into specific parts and was not continuous because the developers needed to animate what was filmed. The script pages collected by Ned Luke alone numbered in the thousands.
