In a surprising and nostalgic turn of events, Sir Paul McCartney reached deep into the archives to perform a Beatles treasure at the high-profile wedding reception of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
According to reports from People, the legendary 84-year-old icon treated guests at the Madison Square Garden celebration to a rare performance of the Fab Four’s classic, “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” This marked a significant moment for fans, as it was the song’s first live outing in over six decades.
An insider noted that following the wedding ceremony, attendees were escorted into the reception hall where a stage had been expertly prepared. The festivities also featured a surprise appearance by Fleetwood Mac icon Stevie Nicks, an addition to the evening’s musical lineup confirmed by broadcaster Robin Roberts.
Data from setlist.fm suggests that McCartney’s selection of early-era Beatles material was a true rarity; he had not performed the track publicly since the group’s final 1964 concert at the Paramount Theatre in New York. The song remains a cornerstone of music history, having soared to No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in its debut year.
The mutual admiration between Swift and McCartney is well-documented. Swift recently championed the former Beatle’s latest solo project, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, via Instagram, praising him as an “eternally exceptional artist.”
The pair have a storied history of creative collaboration, ranging from an impromptu rendition of “Shake It Off” at the 2015 Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary party to an in-depth conversation on songwriting for Rolling Stone. Most recently, McCartney was spotted among the crowd at Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour stop in London, where he was filmed enthusiastically dancing to her track, “But Daddy I Love Him.”
