Not Even a Beer-Chugging Eddie Vedder Could Save the U.S. Men’s Team From a World Cup Meltdown

Eddie Vedder brought a bit of rock-and-roll energy to Lumen Field this past Monday (July 6). The Pearl Jam icon was in attendance for the intense 2026 FIFA World Cup showdown between the United States and Belgium. While cameras caught the Seattle native and his daughter, Olivia, enjoying the match early on, it was Vedder’s spontaneous antics during a second-half hydration break that truly galvanized the crowd as the American team’s prospects began to fade.

With the U.S. trailing 3-1, the 61-year-old musician stole the spotlight when he enthusiastically chugged his entire beer. As foam traced down his face, he triumphantly hoisted the empty can onto his head, sparking a massive cheer from the stadium. On cue, the arena’s sound system blasted Pearl Jam’s 1991 anthem “Alive”—though, ironically, the American side looked far from revitalized, ultimately succumbing to a 4-1 defeat that ousted them from the round of 16.

While Vedder is legendary for his unwavering support of the Chicago Cubs, his presence provided a much-needed morale boost during an otherwise difficult outing. The U.S. team faced a formidable Belgian defense, and even the return of striker Folarin Balogun—following a highly debated intervention involving political figures and FIFA leadership—couldn’t shift the momentum in favor of the hosts.

Belgium didn’t hold back in the aftermath, posting a direct message to X: “Overturn this.” The team further poked fun at the political climate by performing a choreographed, mocking rendition of the viral “Trump Dance” before leaving the pitch.

Despite the tournament exit, Vedder seems to be relishing his time away from the stage. Pearl Jam remains on hiatus until September 27, when they are set to headline the singer’s own Ohana Festival in Dana Point—a significant milestone for the band as they prepare for their first performance since the departure of longtime drummer Matt Cameron.
