Scheduled for January, CES 2026 will serve as the launchpad for next-generation cabling featuring HDMI 2.2 support. Among the premier hardware showcased will be the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
The HDMI Licensing Administrator has officially confirmed that the event will feature the inaugural prototypes of UltraHDMI 96, based on the HDMI 2.2 specification ratified in June 2025. This latest standard effectively doubles interface bandwidth, leaping from 48 Gbps to a staggering 96 Gbps. Engineered to empower future hardware, the protocol supports 16K resolution at 60 Hz (utilizing DSC), uncompressed 4K at 240 Hz, and 8K at 60 Hz with comprehensive 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. Additionally, it introduces 12-bit color depth and a sophisticated Latency Indication Protocol designed for frame-perfect audio-visual synchronization.
At the HDMI LA exhibit, attendees can witness a 500 Hz gaming monitor driven by a high-end PC and Xbox Series X to demonstrate the standard’s raw capabilities. The showcase will also highlight the evolution of portable gaming, featuring the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Atari Gamestation Go operating via HDMI with integrated eARC support.
Industry experts expect HDMI 2.2 to be integrated into the forthcoming generation of graphics cards, including AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture. The first wave of certified UltraHDMI 96 cables is projected to hit retail shelves throughout 2026.
