Square Enix has unveiled a new mobile installment in the Dissidia Final Fantasy series that flips the franchise’s usual fantasy trappings into a contemporary setting. Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy places iconic protagonists into a present-day Tokyo that has grown around an enormous, enigmatic crystal.

The crystal is no benign landmark: corrupted energy leaks from its core, spawning monsters that overrun the metropolis. In response, champions drawn from across Final Fantasy history materialize to repel the threat. Between conflicts, familiar faces such as Cloud and Lightning blend into everyday life, adopting modern clothing and routines until duty calls — almost like urban superheroes living incognito.

The narrative includes a fully voiced main story in Japanese, supplemented by bite-sized episodes that explore the heroes’ daily lives. These segments include chat-style exchanges—Terra showing off new outfits to Warrior of Light, for example—adding character-driven moments that expand the cast beyond combat scenes.

On the gameplay side, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy centers on cooperative 3v3 boss encounters: two teams race to down a towering boss while fending off wandering monsters. The combat is third-person and optimized for mobile — the controls are designed for one-handed play to keep matches quick and accessible.
