Since its debut in 2017, Nier: Automata has evolved from a niche action-RPG into a genuine global phenomenon. Developer PlatinumGames has officially announced that the title has surpassed a staggering 10 million copies sold. To celebrate this landmark achievement, Square Enix released a commemorative video that concludes with a cryptic “To Be Continued” message, sending the fanbase into a frenzy of speculation.
While Game Informer originally awarded the game a 7.75 at launch, its cultural footprint has grown exponentially over the years. This enduring popularity is fueled by the game’s philosophical narrative, hidden secrets, and the unique structural choice of requiring multiple playthroughs to uncover the full story. The franchise’s momentum previously led to the revitalized Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 and the narrative-heavy mobile spin-off, Nier Reincarnation.
Now, the community is back in “theorycrafting” mode. The teaser at the end of the anniversary video has sparked numerous questions about the future of the series:
- Is a direct console sequel finally in development?
- Could we see a “Zero-style” remake of the now-defunct Nier Reincarnation?
- Is this a tease for a new concert series, anime season, or merchandise line?

Given the history of director Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames, the answer is rarely predictable. For the time being, this single screenshot is the only breadcrumb fans have to follow. We can only hope that the studio doesn’t leave its audience in the dark for too long.
